Karpov was born in Zlatoust in the former Soviet Union and learned to play chess at the age of 4. At age 12 he was accepted into Mikhail Botvinnik's super-prestigious chess school. He became the youngest Soviet National Master in history at 15, and won in his first international chess tournament several months later. In 1967 he took 5th in the Soviet Junior Chess Championship and won the European Junior Chess Championship several months later. But his career really took off in 1969 when he became the first Soviet player since Boris Spassky (1955) to win the World Junior Chess Championship with a score of 10 out of 11.Soon afterwards he tied for 4th place at an international tournamnent in Caracas, Venezuela and became the world's youngest Grandmaster.

The 1970's showed a major improvement in his game. His Elo rating shot up from 2540 in 1971 to 2660 in 1973, when he came in 2nd in the USSR Chess Championship and placed first in the Leningrad Interzonal Tournament. The latter qualified him for the 1974 Candidates cycle, which determined who was allowed challenge the reigning World Champion, Bobby Fischer.

In 1978, Karpov's first title defence was against Viktor Korchnoi, the opponent he beat in the previous Candidates tournament. The situation was vastly different from the previous match.In the intervening years Korchnoi had defected from the Soviet Union. The match was played in Baguio in the Philippines, and a vast array of psychological tricks were used during the match, from Karpov's Dr. Zukhov who attempted to hypnotize Korchnoi during the game, to Korchnoi's mirror glasses to ward off the hypnotic stare, Korchnoi's offering to play under the Jolly Roger flag when he was denied the right to play under Switzerland's, to Karpov's yogurt supposedly being used to send him secret messages, to Korchnoi inviting two local cult members (on trial for attempted murder) into the hall as members of his team.

Karpov's tournament career also reached a peak at the exceptional Montreal "Super-Grandmaster" tournament in 1979, where he ended joint first with Mikhail Tal ahead of a field of superb grandmasters like Jan Timman, Ljubomir Ljubojevic, Boris Spassky, and Lubomir Kavalek. Meanwhile, he had also won the prestigious Linares tournament in 1981 (and again in 1994), the Tilburg tournament in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1983, and the USSR championship in 1976 and 1983 (and again in 1988).

In their first match in 1984, Karpov quickly built a 4-0 lead, and needed only two more wins to keep his title. Instead, the next 16 games were drawn, and it took Karpov until Game 27 to finally win a game. In Game 31, Karpov had a winning position but failed to take advantage and settled for a draw.He lost the next game, but drew the next 14. In particular, Karpov held a solidly winning position in Game 41, but again blundered terribly and had to settle for a draw. After Kasparov suddenly won Game 47 and 48, Karpov suffered a mental and physical breakdown, having lost 22 pounds over the course of the match. The FIDE President controversially terminated the match, which had lasted an unprecedented four months with five wins for Karpov, three for Kasparov, and an staggering forty draws. A rematch was set for the following year.In a hard fight, featuring a incredible blunder by Karpov in the final game, Karpov lost his title 11 to 13 in the 1985 match, ending his ten year reign as champion.

Karpov's playing style is solidly positional, taking no risks but reacting mercilessly to any tiny errors made by his opponents, also referred to as the boa constrictor style. As a result, he is often compared to his idol, the famous Jose Raul Capablanca, the third World Champion. Karpov himself describes his style as follows: "Let us say the game may be continued in two ways: one of them is a beautiful tactical blow that gives rise to variations that don't yield to precise calculation; the other is clear positional pressure that leads to an endgame with microscopic chances of victory.... I would choose the latter without thinking twice. If the opponent offers keen play I don't object; but in such cases I get less satisfaction, even if I win, than from a game conducted according to all the rules of strategy with its ruthless logic."

People believed Karpov's style was always bland, but he was capable of brilliant attack (for example, Torre-Karpov, Bad Lautenberg 1976 shows Karpov provoking his opponent to overextend then counterattacking through the centre with a pretty pawn sacrifice).Though he keeps his opening repertoire relatively narrow (he likes to stick to the Queen's Indian and Caro-Kann Defences), his middlegame is solid and his mastery of the ending in particular unparallelled. It is also said that he exploits even the smallest advantage in space better than anyone else in history.

Garry Kimovich Kasparov (born April 13, 1963) is a chess grandmaster and the strongest (highest rated on the FIDE April 2004 list at 2817) chess player in the world. Kasparov trained at Mikhail Botvinnik's chess school. His talent and potential were clear when he won the Soviet Junior Championship at Tbilisi in 1976, scoring 7 points out of 9. He was 13 at the time. He repeated the feat the following year, demolishing the field with a score of 8.5/9.

In 1978 Kasparov participated in the Sokolsky Memorial tournament at Minsk. He had been invited as an exception, but took place, and also became master. Kasparov has repeatedly said that this event was a turning point in his life, and that it convinced him to choose chess as his career. "I will rememeber the Sololsky Memorial as long as I live", he wrote. He has also said that after the victory, he thought he had a very good shot at the World Championship.

Garry's rise up the FIDE ranking order was nothing short of phenomenal. Starting with an oversight by the Russian chess federation, Garry Kasparov participated in a Grandmaster tournament in Banja Luka while still unrated (the federation thought it was a junior tournament). He emerged from this top-class encounter with a provisional rating of 2595, enough to catapult him into the top group of chess players.

It was clear from early on that Garry had the playing strength to match the then current world champion Anatoly Karpov - a firm favourite of the Russian Chess Federation. But first Garry had to pass the test of the Candidates Tournament to qualify.

Kasparov's Candidates final match was against the resurgent Vassily Smyslov (who won his match against Huebner by the spin of a roulette wheel!). Smyslov was the seventh world champion in 1957, but later years saw his willingness to fight for wins greatly diminished. This posed no problems for the youngster from Baku who registered a comfortable win.

The 1984 World Championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov had its fair share of ups and downs, as well as the most controversial finish to a competitive match ever. Karpov started off in very good form, and within a dozen games Kasparov found himself 4-0 down in a "first to six wins" match. Fellow players predicted a 6-0 whitewash of Kasparov within 18 games.

The termination of the match was a matter of some controversy. At the press conference at which he announced his decision, Campomanes cited the health of the two players, which had been put under strain by the length of the match, yet both Karpov and Kasparov stated that they would prefer the match to continue. Karpov's statement was difficult to believe: he had lost 22 pounds over the course of the match and had been hospitalized several times. Kasparov was in excellent health and extremely resentful of Campomanes' decision, asking him why he was abandoning the match if both players wanted to continue. It would appear that Kasparov, who had won the last two games before the suspension, felt the same way as some commentators - that he was now the favourite to win the match despite his 5-3 deficit. He appeared to be physically stronger than his opponent, and in the later games seemed to have been playing the better chess.

Whatever the reasons for the abandonment, the match became the first, and so far only, world championship match to be abandoned without result. Kasparov had made a new enemy in Campomanes, and the feud between the two would eventually come to a head in 1993 with Kasparov's complete break-away from FIDE.

In November 2003, he engaged in a four game match against chess playing computer program X3D Fritz (which was said to have an estimated rating of 2807), using a virtual board, 3D glasses and a speech recognition system. The first was a draw, X3D won the second after Kasparov blundered when short of time, Kasparov won the third, and the last game was a draw. The X3D Man-Machine World Chess Championship match ended in draw. Kasparov receives $175,000 for the result and takes home the golden trophy. (Although since it drew the match X3D Fritz said it was going to store a virtual reality copy of the trophy for itself.). Kasparov continued to criticize the blunder in the second game that cost him a crucial point. He felt that he had outplayed the machine overall and played well. "I only made one mistake but unfortunately that one mistake lost the game."

Anatoli Karpov and Garry Kasparov are going to find each other again 25 years after their historical match for the world’s champion title. Both players, who maintained 1984-1990 a strong contend beyond sports, are going to fight a duel September 21st to 25th in Valencia. A match consisting in 12 games; 4 semirrapid and 8 blitz, which are placed within the framework of a number of acts defending the city as the cradle of the modern chess.

The negotiations for receiving this confrontation have been long, but Valencia has finally achieved being the venue for this mythical duel. The city turns in as the first one welcoming a match between the two best chess players ever. The act will be retransmitted for the whole world on the radio, television and internet and it’s expected that 10 million people will follow it. Besides, 20 players of the Comunitat are going to play simultaneous chess games against Karpov and Kasparov.

The purpose of the event: ‘Valencia, cuna del Ajedrez Moderno’ (Valencia, cradle of the modern chess) is paying tribute to the city of Valencia, because it was here where the rules of the modern chess were defined in the XVth century and this fact caused its transformation and turned it into one of the most popular sports of the world. It was in Valencia, May 15th 1495 when Francesch Vicent, from Segorbe, published ‘Llibre del jochs partits del schachs en nombre de 100’, the first chess book containing the modern chess rules. Besides, three Valencian poets like Francн de Castellvн, Bernat Fenollar y Narcнs Vinyoles, invented the poem "Schachs d'amor", creating with it a new form of playing chess, in which the figure of the queen, with its actual strength, was emphasized.

Chess is actually one sport that counts with 17 million federates in the world; the third after football and athletics. In Valencia, there are 250 children practicing chess as an out-of-school activity.

It has been 25 years since their first duel, but Anatoli Karpov and Garry Kasparov are still not talking to each other. Their legendary rilvalry makes that, according to the organization of the match which will confront them September 21st to 25th, they are going to be in different hotels during their stay and they won’t see each other until they have to sit down and play. They don’t want to see each other before.

Although it’s an exhibition, the two K’s are taking this match very seriously. They are going to play a 12 games match; It will consist of 4 rapid (or semi rapid) and 8 blitz games and will take place exactly 25 years after the mythical encounter between the two players. This match between Kasparov and Karpov is in honour of the Queen as a chess piece, which emerged from the region of Valencia in the XV century, thus putting the beginning of the modern chess rules.

While Karpov, cold, astute and defensive, was one of the defenders of the Communist regime, Kasparov is aggressive, rebel, furious and symbol of the Perestroika. Two complete different personalities. Chess has never been the same it was with them. "We can’t say we are friends" says Karpov. "Our styles were opposed, like fire and ice", reminds Kasparov.

2007, Kasparov was arrested because of his differences with the president, Vladimir Putin, who he considers "a dictator". Karpov tried to visit him at the cells of the soviet police. But, as they both have often recognized, "it was a gesture of respect, not of friendship".

Before and after 500 hours playing against each other, both Karpov and Kasparov declared openly the hate they felt against the other. 25 years later, and approaching to their match, their enmity has risen and we can see it on details such as them not sharing the same hotel.

Their first match for the World Championship (Moscow 1984) was suspended because of physical exhaustion of both. It was the beginning of 144 official games and 5 World Championships, until 1990. A golden period in the history of chess, in which one of the biggest sports rivalry between two geniuses was founded. Now, they are going to compete in Valencia with the same emotion.

давно не видел как играет Каспаров, но в курсе, что иногда он играет в онлайне, а касательно Карпова - играет не так, как раньше. Зевает часто, возраст сказывается.

Anatoly Karpov is taking very seriously the Valencia 2009 encounter with Kasparov. When he stated that he will go for the victory and revealed the presence of Viktor Bologan in his team, Karpov also hinted that other grandmasters will be helping him. This weekend, Chessdom.com can confirm the presence of two more strong tactical players in Karpov's team - GM Onischuk and GM Riazantsev.

Kasparov is being much more silent for his preparation and team for the match. Besides his training with Carlsen, not much is known. He will be arriving Clara Kasparova, but no names of seconds have been revealed.

Karpov is in Valencia since last week, to accommodate, enjoy the beach, and adjust to the local climate. Kasparov arrives today (Sunday 20th) and the plane lands a few minutes after the arrival of the flight of Dr. Sulaiman Al-Fahim, president of the Chess Federation of the UAE.

On Monday, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov are going to offer a press conference to the media at Fundación Bancaja at 12:00 h. local time. At 13:30, the Russian chess players, together with the members of the organizing commitee, will be offially welcomed at the Valencian City Council by the mayor Rita Barberá.

Just a week ago, when the details of the match Kasparov Kaprov in Valencia 2009 were presented on Chessdom.com, we revealed that the two K are planning larger tour around the world including cities such as Paris, Moscow, and New York.

The first confirmation comes from France, where Kasparov and Karpov will play in Paris, December 11-13, 2009. The program is yet to be fully announced, but the show is expected to include simuls and other side events. The format will be blitz and rapid games, just as in Valencia.

The organizers of the "Valencia, cuna del ajedrez moderno" chess match between Kasparov and Karpov have presented the official videos of the event. It goes through the history of Valencia, the creation of the Queen as a chess piece, and the importance of the Kasparov - Karpov match 25 years after their last encounter.

From the video we learn one of the most important aspects of the competition, the schedule of the match. On day one there will be a press conference early in the morning followed by a "Welcome Fiesta" where the audience will have open access to the players for questions and autographs. The day will finish with a simul by Kasparov and Karpov.

The next two days will be played rapid games (25 min time control) and on day 4 the players will compete in blitz games (5 min time control), making the total number of games 12.

On the last day there will be a closing ceremony.

Kasparov wins all, Karpov with one draw[/b]

Kasparov and Karpov played a total of 40 games late on Monday evening at Ciudad de Las Artes y Ciencias. In a little more than two hours Kasparov won all his games. Karpov did not have problems on most of the boards, but Irene Arques, one of the best local female players, played a very nice game. At the end Karpov offered draw and both shook hands. Irene Arques shared with journalists, "In the beginning he was winning, but I managed to come back and he offered a draw."

Before the start of the game, Kasparov played a few moves with Sulaiman Al Fahim, the President of the Chess Federation of UAE and owner of Portsmouth. Later during the simul K & K played with Víctor Luengo (a famous local basketball player), the driver and winner of Valencia Circuit - Jose Luis Pampló, and other famous local players.

It is interesting to note that the first victory at the simul was achieved by Karpov. The game continued only 8 moves. The player that lost was happy anyhow, noting that this was a very emotional experience for him.

Каспаров взял первые 2 партии. Как я и думал.
Да я помню 80-ые и эти знаменитые битвы гигантов- "двух К" Весь мир тогда следил за этими матчами, это была борьба стилей, характеров, систем.
Более консервативный, холодный Карпов и молодой, эмоциональный Каспаров. Даже футбол отходил на 2-й план, когда играли 2 гениальных шахматиста.

Каспаров взял только вторую партию, а в первой Карпов в один ход коня подставил. Как я писал, он зевает часто сейчас. Но сегодня сыграли тот же вариант и он не зевнул, постепенно реализовал свое преимущество и уверенно выиграл.

Счет 2-1 в пользу Каспарова.

я болею за Каспарова. Если не считать его увлечения российской политикой, он осталься вполне адекватным человеком, и всегда дистанцииорвался от армянских штучек. В своей книге писал и о роли Гейдара в своей карьере.
Не знаю почему некоторые на этой теме его ругают. Для меня он прежде всего человек родившийся и выросший в Азербайджане и ничем своего имени не опорочивший!

а у меня дома видео, где он признается, что он очень рад победе своего земляка на турнире Кубок Каспарова - Вугар выиграл его турнир в 1999-м году.

Каспаров выиграл 4-ю партию, счет 3-1. Играл он вторую партию очень крепко, не знаю на сколько этого хватало для победы, но все же выиграл (если я правильно понял, то черные просрочили время).

ну вот видиш! очень приятный штрих в его портрет

4-ю партию черные просрочили, но у Гарри там такая позиция была, он уже Карпова в тиски брал. Думаю дожал бы в любом случае.

При все уважении время обоих ушло!!! Решили товарищи К. деньги срубить.
Каспаров вечный бунтарь. Он не смог переворить свой отьезд из Баку. Поэтому много глупостей наговорил. Сейчас не переваривает путинскую Россию, поэтому ушел в жесткую оппозицию.
Да были времена. КАк мы болели за Каспарова. И в шахматной школе каждую их игру анализировали. Хотя не понимал я тогда все тонкости их баталий))

может и ушло их время, но таких харизматичных игроков в шахматах больше нет. И По-моему Каспаров по-прежнему в хорошой форме.
